Floquet engineering, moire materials and beyond

Abstract:

Both materials displaying moire patterns - due to the overlap of incommensurate lattice structures - as well as periodically driven quantum systems - so-called Floquet systems - are a current frontier in condensed matter theory. The interest in both topics has been sparked by various recent ground-breaking experiments - most prominently the discovery of superconductivity in twisted multilayer graphene materials at particular twist angles - the so-called magic angles. After giving a brief introduction to both topics I will present some of our recent work that is at the seam of both of these exciting research areas. Particularly I will give an overview about the rich phenomenology of different moire materials such as twisted multilayer graphene systems and twisted transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) bilayers when subjected to different forms of light.

In a second part of the talk, I will give a brief overview about some of my other research interests and the work that has been done in these areas - or is still ongoing. These areas include applications of machine learning to transport in condensed matter devices and research into spin liquids, some of which are generally expected to have useful applications in quantum computing - due to the existence of localized Majorana fermions, which serve as qubits.
