Abstract:

Physical vapor deposition (PVD) process is as old as the discovery of electricity, magnetism, and gaseous chemical reactions in the early 19th century. Since then, PVD process has developed and continues to evolve as an advanced deposition technique. Besides being an environmentally friendly process and the improved properties obtainable, the advantage of depositing adherent thin films and coatings on almost any substrate has made PVD process very attractive. Similarly, this has made it found applications in various facets of human life from manufacturing, electronics, data storage, solar products, medical equipment among others. The global market has thus expanded over the years attaining a market size of USD 18.9 billion in 2019 and expected to reach USD 30.3 billion by 2027. In this presentation, PVD techniques will be highlighted with an elucidation of associated pros and cons. Furthermore, considerations for obtaining superior coating properties will be discussed while some relevant applications based on investigations conducted at the Interdisciplinary Research Center for Advanced Materials (IRC-AM) at KFUPM will be demonstrated. The talk will be concluded with future directions and prospects of the PVD coatings.

Biography:

Dr. Akeem is a Research Engineer-III at the Interdisciplinary Research Center for Advanced Materials, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. He earned his MSc (2013) and Ph.D. (2018), in Mechanical Engineering (Applied Materials and Manufacturing) from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals. Since then, he has been working on corrosion and tribological behavior of materials while applying novel approaches and processes to improve their performance. He has a particular interest in materials processing and coating base solutions for corrosion protection and tribological applications for the Oil & Gas, petrochemical, chemical, energy, and water industries. He has authored/co-authored more than 40 articles in esteemed ISI journals and has one issued US patent. He has contributed to the successful completion of several client-funded projects.
