“The future of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID ) for  A Sustainable Environment.”

Date:           Wednesday, 6th October 2021

Time:           2:30 PM

Location:     Bldg. 22 Room 134

Speaker:        Dr. Wasim Raad, COE Dept.

Abstract:     RFID in the simplest form, and as its name implies, radio frequency identification, is the process and physical infrastructure by which a unique identifier, within a predefined protocol definition, is transferred from a device to a reader via radio frequency waves. Radio frequency identification (RFID) is revolutionizing the way organizations around the world track the location and movement of goods and assets, in addition to securing access control to their premises. RFID in particular, has recently received focus as an augmentation technology in ubiquitous computing domain. RFID technology utilizes inexpensive wireless RFID chips or tags that report their location to nearby scanners. Items with RFID tags can be tracked from the supplier’s factory floor to the retailer’s store shelves. As radiofrequency identification technology steadily evolves, its potential to drive significant changes in multiple industries is clear. The impact of RFID technology as a ubiquitous component in the information age is expanding with new and innovative applications in retail, government, manufacturing and healthcare. The speaker will throw light on the state of the art advancements in RFID research and applications, in addition to the role of the RFID lab at KFUPM in spreading the RFID education in the region. The speaker will also elaborate on the impact of RFID on the Saudi market.

Short bio of presenter:     Dr. Raad joined King Fahd University Petroleum Minerals, Computer Engineering Dept. 1986, where he worked as a lecturer and researcher in the field of smart cards & RFID. He Obtained his PhD from University Bradford UK 2005 in embedded systems & signal processing. He gave consultation to a number of companies in the region, in addition to a number of workshops and tutorials on smart cards and RFID. In 2010, he established the first Smart Card & RFID university lab in the region to support student projects as well as conducting short courses for the industry in RFID/NFC. In the last two years he was involved in two funded  projects: implementing RFID in MIT-KFUPM joined project for renewable energy & hajj project for tracking pilgrimage.
